How much does each person pay when tax and tip are added to a bill?

An equal bill split builds the payable total from the base bill, tax and tip, then divides it by the number of people. Showing each component prevents the per-person figure from becoming a black box.

Building the total before dividing it

Tax and tip are each calculated as a percentage of the entered pre-tax bill. Both amounts are added to the bill to produce the grand total.

The grand total is divided equally by the number of people. Tip is based on the pre-tax bill in this formula, and the calculation does not handle unequal orders or separate payments.

Subtotal plus charges, divided equally

Tax = Bill × Tax% ÷ 100Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100Total = Bill + Tax + TipPer person = Total ÷ People

A tax-and-tip group bill

The default bill calculates tax and tip from the bases defined by the formula, adds them to the subtotal and distributes the result equally.

Each person pays$49.14
Grand total$196.56
Tax$12.48
Tip$28.08

Group size changes shares, not total charges

Per-person amount falls as group size increases, but the overall tax and tip do not. Confirm whether tip is calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax base used by the tool.

When an equal split is not fair

Equal division is inappropriate when orders differ materially. In that case, allocate items first and then apply shared charges using an agreed method.

  • The bill is divided equally among a positive number of people.
  • Tax and tip follow the bases shown in the formula.
  • Unequal orders, coupons and separate service charges are excluded.
