How much tip should be added and what is the total per person?
A tip calculation applies the entered percentage to the bill base, adds that amount to the bill and, where requested, divides the total across the party.
Tip, total and equal share
Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100Total = Bill + TipPer person = Total ÷ PeopleOne bill shared across a party
The default example calculates the tip amount first, then shows the full payable amount and an equal per-person split.
Illustrative inputs; currency amounts below use USD. Rates and prices are assumptions, not live quotes.
- Bill amount
- $84.00
- Tip
- 18%
- People
- 2
Step-by-step calculation
- Tip = 84 × 18 ÷ 100 = 15.12.
- Total = 84 + 15.12 = 99.12; split between 2 people gives 49.56 each.
Intermediate figures are rounded for reading. Results use the full calculation precision.
What changes with rate and group size
Tip amount changes with the bill and rate; per-person total also changes with party size. The split is equal and does not assign individual orders.
Tax and service charges already on the bill
Check whether the percentage should apply before or after tax and whether a service charge is already included. Adding both can duplicate the gratuity.
- One percentage is applied to the entered bill base.
- The final amount is split equally among the entered number of people.
- Existing service charges, coupons and unequal orders are excluded.
